I was recently asked for marketing ideas that could possibly build traffic and help with customer retention, cheaply. All i have is just the normal die hard guerrilla marketing tactics. We are not a marketing company, and concentrate on development, which is what we do best. These bullet points should help anyone's website though.
- add a support ticket system, billets works great
- add a email newsletter component, acymailing is what we use, but you will have to throttle the sending of newsletter so as not to trigger your hosts server spam filters
- create special sales packages
- create a best sellers list
- blog blog blog, on other peoples websites, make sure they are related
- send out press releases
- add coupon functionality, add a coupon in every order so as a repeat sales incentive
- add video to the site, and host at you tube, how to's can be effective
- get reviewed by your local media, newspapers and magazines, many local TV stations spotlite local businesses, and free, and will give you the video to post on your website
- do not ever rely on search engines
